The TrapeziumThe engine

At the heart sits a tight knot of brilliant newborn stars. Their fierce radiation lights up the entire nebula around them.

Glowing HydrogenEmission wings

The rosy wings sweeping out either side are hydrogen gas, set aglow by the young stars within — the signature red of an emission nebula.

Dark DustCold lanes

The dark notches and lanes carving into the glow are cold dust, dense enough to block the light behind them.

A Second PocketStar birth nearby

Below the main nebula glows another pocket of gas (M43) — part of the same vast cloud quietly forming stars of its own.

Reading starlight

A star's colour is its temperature. The same physics that makes a poker glow from red to white-hot sorts the young stars across this view: blue suns are scorching, amber ones cooler.
