The brilliant core of the Lagoon, where the most massive young stars blast the surrounding gas with radiation and set it ablaze.

The rosy glow filling the frame is hydrogen gas lit from within by the young stars — the signature red of an emission nebula.

The dark channel winding through the bright gas is a lane of cold dust — the rift that gives the nebula its name.

A Newborn ClusterNGC 6530

The scatter of hot blue stars is a young open cluster, only a few million years old, that formed straight out of this very cloud.

Reading starlight

A star's colour is its temperature. The same physics that makes a poker glow from red to white-hot sorts the stars across this field: blue suns are scorching, red ones cool and old.
