The Bright CoreHydrogen at full fury

The most intensely lit part of the cloud. The glow is so fierce here that its usual red saturates toward pink and white — star formation on a massive scale, happening now.

The EngineA hidden cluster

Some of the hottest, heaviest stars known are buried in dust here. Their ultraviolet light powers the entire nebula — yet the stars themselves stay mostly hidden from view.

Dark NebulaThe molecular cloud

Cold, dusty gas not yet lit up. M17 sits on the edge of a giant cloud, and this is the frontier — glowing gas on one side, opaque dust on the other.

The Red RimGlowing hydrogen

The deep-red outer streamers — hydrogen gas glowing at its signature red wavelength, the same light that colours every emission nebula in the sky.

Reading starlight

A star's colour is its temperature. The same physics that makes a poker glow from red to white-hot sorts the stars across this field: blue suns are scorching, red ones are cool and old.
